Project description:
The Malaria Vaccine Implementation Program Evaluation (MVIPE) in Kenya is a collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA (CDC). The vaccine is be implemented by the Kenya Ministry of Health through the National Vaccines and Immunizations Program (NVIP) in moderate to high malaria transmission settings in eight counties in Western Kenya: Bungoma, Busia, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kisumu, Migori, Siaya, and Vihiga. The primary objective of this evaluation is to estimate the effect of the routine delivery of RTS,S/AS01 on all-cause mortality in children under 5 years of age. The project has a vacancy for a software developer/data manager for the Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation study.
Position: Software Developer/Data Manager KMR 6 (1 position)
Location: Kisumu Duration: One (1) year with a possibility of extension
Reporting to: Principal Investigator
Summary of Job description
The successful candidate will work with the Trial Manager and the Principal Investigators in designing a robust data management system and work with other data managers in designing and implementing data collection systems and overseeing data collection and staff training. The holder of this position shall be expected to operate from the KEMRI-CGHR field station in Kisian with occasional visits to the field.
Person Specification:
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:-
• BSc in Computer Science, Biostatistics, Applied Statistics or any other related field
• Familiarity with modern database systems and information technologies including USSDs, Cloud computing and cloud server management
• Excellent working knowledge of statistical packages/ programs
• An analytical mindset with excellent communication and problem-solving skills
• Ability to translate complex problems clearly and in nontechnical terms, ability and willingness to learn additional skills on the job
Skills & Abilities:
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and a focus on quality and innovation
• Ability to prioritize work, exercise initiative and work with minimal direction
• Ability to manage multiple studies of medium complexity or size concurrently
• Adaptability to changes in work duties, responsibilities, and requirements
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues, including research scientists
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Gather requirements, design build, and implement study databases and data collection tools
2. Devise and implement efficient procedures for automation of data outputs and dashboards for data visualization
3. Overseeing (in conjunction with technical experts) the use and operation data capture and storage platforms and ensure compliance with the national and international standards
4. Assist with the training, management, and supervision of the daily data collection at the field sites
5. Maintain tablets and other equipment used for data collection, ensuring data is downloaded daily and forms are updated as needed
6. Perform regular data reviews and identify problems with the data quality and integrity, communicate the issues and work with program staff and supervisors for timely corrective action/query resolution
7. Create/Script automated anomaly/error detection systems and constantly track performance.
8. Create and manage data dictionaries, as well as version control of study forms
9. Generate routine statistical reports and custom dashboards as needed for information dissemination
10. Work with the study team to ensure that data reporting needs are scheduled and addressed
11. Evaluate study data for protocol compliance
12. Participate in planning meetings and scheduled conference calls with the study team and study partners.
Terms of Employment:
One (1) year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months.
Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
