NURSE CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR Ref No. NCI/02/2022
•Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the clinical instructor augments the academic faculty in linking the theoretical and practical knowledge in order to train and develop a competent health care professional who can be able to give quality nursing care. In addition, coordinates clinical experience and supervision of Nurses in all clinical set ups.
Key Area Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Instruction for Nurses;
o Conduct clinical instruction to all Nurses in all clinical placement sites both internal and external.
o Introduce students to the clinical placement sites and facilitate their orientation with every change of clinical placement.
o Ensure that the skills lab is always well stocked and keep an inventory of the supplies and equipment in the skills lab.
o Regularly update the teaching staff and students on any new development regarding nursing procedures.
2. Coordinate Movements of Students to Hospital upon Graduation;
o Responsible for coordination and sourcing of placement areas for students upon graduation in liaison with the Chief Nursing Officer and Principal.
o Liaise with College to coordinate placements of students and update senior nursing staff accordingly.
o Demonstrate, supervise and assess nursing procedures both in the ward and class tutorials.
o Working closely with the Quality Assurance and Training Coordinator to assess the training needs all Nurses and plan how to address these.
3. Clinical Conferences and Training;
o Conduct clinical conferences with staff to facilitate skill acquisition and current nursing practice.
o Conducts training in support of CME and address skills gaps.
o Assess training needs.
o Liaise with the Quality Assurance and Training coordinator for Nurses case presentations.
4.Monitor Nurses Clinical Performance;
o Ensure students’ clinical performance records are completed by ward supervisors one week (1) before the end of placement and such records updated in individual student’s file.
o Plan and conduct Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs) on specified skills required to be mastered by the students before attending to patients.
o Plan and coordinate Nursing Council assessments for students within the clinical placements.
o Ensure that students fill in the skills taught and demonstrated in their practical/clinical log books.
o Record actual work done week-by-week in regards to practical subjects and progress records of individual students clinical performance.
5. Support to the College’s Activities;
o Participate in mentorship programme and counselling sessions for students.
o Participate in planning and coordinating co-curricular activities for students.
o Participate in the institution’s Brand promotion as well as other marketing strategies for growth of the school.
o Perform any other duty assigned by the Principal as it may be deemed necessary from time to time
6. Professional Development;
o Maintain and develop own professional competencies and knowledge by attending and participating in continuous education sessions within and externally.
o Act as a mentor to students and junior staff
o Participate in the identification of training needs for students and clinical staff.
o Must have clinical teaching, counselling ,mentorship and assessment skills
Minimum requirement:
o Diploma (KRCHN) / Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN)
o Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing;
o Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid license;
o Minimum of 2 years’ experience of classroom and clinical teaching experience at an institution of higher learning;
o Ability to teach using a variety of methods to effectively engage students in learning;
o Advanced computer skills and understanding of its use in a college setting;
o Able to counsel and mentor students and staff;
o Able to lead a large group of students;
o Able to assess students oral and written work including exam papers;
o Advanced written and oral communication skills. Able to provide stimulating lectures for students and provide written materials for students.
o Good organisation skills.
