MEDICAL SPECIALIST II – (RADIATION / CLINICAL ONCOLOGY), JOB GROUP -
KNH6 (2POSTS)
Job Purpose
The Medical Specialists (Radiation/Clinical Oncology) are responsible to a Head of Department in the provision of specialized diagnostic, curative, rehabilitative and preventive health care services to the population under their care; they are entrusted to provide quality health care services.
Duties and Responsibilities
i) Managing and treating cancer patients in coordination with the other departmental staff
throughout the entire course of cancer treatment.
ii) Collecting medical histories and performing physical evaluations in addition to basic
administrative duties, such as maintaining records, coordinating with other medical
personnel, to offer treatment to patients.
iii) Investigate and request appropriate investigations and able to interpret them in order to select appropriate oncologic treatment options.
iv) Prescribing various types of treatment, such as chemotherapy, medications and targeted hormonal therapy.
v) Treatment of cancer patients using advanced treatment technology like IMRT, VMAT,
intra-cavity/interstitial Brachytherapy, 3D Conformal Radiotherapy and manipulation of
computer-based tools in achieving treatment goals.
vi) Performing procedures to treat regions of the body affected by cancer treatment.
vii)Writing prescriptions, providing specific cancer information to patients, monitoring
treatment plans and improving patients' quality of life.
viii) Explaining cancer development stages to patients, discussing treatment options
and assisting in symptom management.
ix) Caring for patients throughout the entire course of cancer treatment, from diagnosis to recovery or death.
x) Ensure quality assurance is achieved on equipment, accessories and treatment plans to enhance patient safety
xi) Maintain accurate database of patient information and treatment plans.
xii)Active participation in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and able to consult widely with other sub specialty in Oncology for the best interest of the patient.
xiii) Be research oriented and able to enhance evidence-based practice
xiv) Implement clinical decisions for specialized quality inpatient and outpatient care
that includes provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services;
xv)Implement hospital programmes within their respective specialties
xvi) Champion continuous quality healthcare standards and patient safety guidelines
xvii) Assist in mentoring and coaching of staff in the respective specialties;
xviii) Coordinate intervention activities and programs for training health professionals in
community health and health management in hospitals/health facilities
xix) Implementing clinical review protocols procedures and work instructions for the
practice of specialized care
xx)Coordinating and managing referral care within the framework of the hospital and
national referral policies
xxi) Working with other specialists to solve single or multiple medical issues as
required by patients in the hospital
xxii) Undertaking research activities in the specialty and implement the research
findings to improve quality of service delivery
xxiii) Performing emergency medical procedures
xxiv) Collaborates, writes and responds to requests for consultation from other
Specialist throughout the Hospital in the diagnosis and management of patients not
directly under his/her care.
xxv) Providing high standards of specialized clinical services to patients in the wards
and specialized clinics
xxvi) Performing regular rounds with the registrars and other officers to assist in patient
management.
xxvii) Communicating to all patients under their care about the nature of their illness and
the outlook in treatment of their well-being so that they understand the full extent of
their recovery or disability as may be the case.
xxviii) Carryout specialized diagnostic, therapeutic medical or surgical procedures
xxix) Accepting responsibility for the teaching of the highest standards of medical
practice to medical specialists-in-training, medical officers, medical interns and other
students;
xxx) Executing Medico-legal duties including filling of P3 forms, court attendance and
forensic duties
xxxi) Participating in community diagnosis, preventive & promotive care and treatment;
xxxii) Utilizing patient data to benefit the customer and service provider;
xxxiii) Undertake medical research & clinical audits and implementing the findings
Qualifications and Experience
a) Master’s Degree in Radiation Oncology OR Masters of Clinical Oncology equivalent
qualification from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
b) Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB.) or its equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
c) Specialist recognition certificate in Radiation Oncology or Clinical Oncology from the
Medical Practitioners’ and Dentist Council.
d) Registration Certificate by the Medical Practitioners & Dentist Council.
e) Valid practicing license from Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
f) Valid license from the Kenya Radiation Protection Board with prior experience of working with linear accelerators and simulation.
g) Proof of knowledge in sound diagnostic skills and judgement.
h) Proof of Proficiency in Information Technology with regards to Oncology Information
System (added advantage)
