Position Description:
The Kenya Medical Research Institute/Centre for Global Health Research (KEMRI/CGHR), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are collaborating to conduct research on malaria, HIV, TB , COVID-19 and other diseases of public health importance. An
opportunity is currently open for young motivated and enthusiastic Laboratory technologist within Malaria laboratory to work with the Immunology and Moleculer Biology team.
Position: Assistant Laboratory Technician KMR8 ( 2 positions)
Location: Kisumu County
Reporting: Laboratory In-Charge
Essential Requirements
An applicant must be a graduate of a Diploma OR Higher Diploma in Biological Sciences
(Medical Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Parasitology,
Microbiology) or any relevant field from a recognized institution of higher education in Kenya.
Sufficient knowledge in infectious sample handling
Sufficient knowledge in different types of ELISA assays
Sufficient knowledge on molecular testing procedures, analysis and interpretion
Minimum of one year of experience in a research laboratory
Proficiency in the use of computers and familiarity with laboratory information systems
Desired skills
Ability to work independently, in a timely manner and under minimum supervision
Ability to maintain project schedules and work extra hours as may be required
Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
Major Duties
Study sample reception and accessioning based on established Criteria
Perform routine and complex technical Serological assays according to departmental standard
Operating Procedures
Monitor, Operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
Report accurate and timely test results as per set study protocols
Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
Additional Duties and responsibilities
Maintain proper safety working standards in the laboratory.
Monitor supply consumption and make request for additional reagents and laboratory
equipment.
Maintain and clean and equipment.
Organise biological samples for appropriate storage and shipment.
Produce regular reports to the Laboratory Supervisor
Verification of samples received from the field for purposes of sample tracking
Entry of all laboratory data and production of simple summaries and reports
Carry out all other duties as may be assigned by the Research Officer
Terms of Employment: One year contract as per KEMRI scheme of service
Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, salary scheme is based on
the KEMRI scales.
