SENIOR PRINCIPAL MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST, JOB
GROUP KNH 6 (1 POST)
An officer at this level will be responsible to the Head of Department Laboratory
Medicine in provision of medical laboratory services in the hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities
a) Oversee medical laboratory teams in budget planning and financial
management.
b) Oversee review of health policies, strategies and guidelines at the
department.
c) Oversee implementation of hospital programs in the Laboratory Medicine
Department
d) Coordinate medical laboratory research and dissemination of findings;
e) Oversee capacity development including guiding, training, mentoring and
coaching of staff in the respective specialties;
f) Lead committees as assigned by HOD or other appointing authority
g) Coordinate implementation of ISO 15189:2012 standards and guidelines
within the department
h) Oversee monitoring and evaluation of health policies, strategies and
guidelines
i) Implement contingency plan to ensure that essential services are available
during emergency situations.
j) Ensure Implementation of a safe laboratory environment in compliance with
good practice and applicable requirements.
k) Oversee the implementation of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians
and Technologists Board Act, CAP 253A of1999.
l) Ensure the implementation of biosafety and bio security practices in
medical laboratory services;
m) Coordinate staff performance management and development in Laboratory
Services.
Qualifications and Experience
a) Masters of Science degree in any of the following disciplines; Medical
Parasitology and Entomology, Medical Entomology, Clinical Chemistry,
Haematology, Blood Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology, Medical
Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Clinical Cytology, Histopathology,
Immunology, Epidemiology, Public Health (Epidemiology), Infectious Disease
Diagnosis, Laboratory Management, Molecular Sciences or equivalent
qualification from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical
Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
b) Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences in any of the following
disciplines; or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the
Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
c) Minimum work experience of eight (8) years relevant work experience with
not less than three (3) years as a Principal Medical Laboratory Technologist,
Job Group KNH6 or comparable position.
d) Registration Certificate issued by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians
and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
e) Valid practicing license from Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and
Technologists Board.
f) Certificate in Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from
a recognized institution.
g) Proficiency in Computer Applications.
h) Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya,
2010.
