Position: Site Action Facilitator (Intern)
Reporting to: Executive Director through the Local Action Manager
Place of work: Field and elsewhere as required
Position Summary
The Local Action Facilitator is part of a site action team responsible for catalyzing biodiversity conservation
action. S/he will promote environmental education for the young and public to support perpetual conservation of
Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas. Will also ensure Site Support Groups are vibrant in carrying out their
conservation actions including but not limited to public education, advocacy, monitoring and livelihoods
enhancement. The facilitator will ensure that the resource centers where one exists is well maintained and is used
to deliver environmental education and awareness to the school going children. At schools, the facilitator will
catalyze the establishment of environmental clubs, mobilize schools to plant trees and adopt energy saving
technologies in their kitchens. Where possible the facilitators will advise schools on establishment of tree
nurseries to raise seedlings to be distributed to children to plant in their homes. Local Action facilitator will also
enhance people involvement in saving species and conserving their habitats, working with government to
mainstream nature conservation in development projects, and supporting local community to care for nature.
In order to achieve this, you will have specific responsibilities:
A. Reporting
1. Report through Local Action Manager to Executive Director.
2. Support and facilitate (not take over) SSGs to carry out their work.
3. Work with all Nature Kenya signed staff as necessary for the smooth delivery of Nature Kenya activities.
B. Environmental education
4. Catalyze the formation of environmental clubs in schools.
5. Promote the registration of environmental clubs as Nature Kenya members.
6. Catalyze schools to set up tree nurseries and distribute seedlings through children to plant at home.
7. Manage Eco-resource centers and ensure their full functionality as education resource centers.
8. Host children at the resource centers and educate them on a wide range of environmental matters in their
area and outside as necessary.
9. Organize school events around international days for children to celebrate and create awareness.
10. Organize school interactive programs including environmental art/poetry to create awareness.
11. Mobilize supporters and collaborators to support the eco-resource centers.
12. Ensure full involvement of SSGs in carrying out environmental education to school going children.
13. Develop appropriate environmental education materials.
14. Brand the resource centers and schools (climate smart schools) and other investments as appropriate.
15. Support in raising resources to repair and equip the resource center.
C. Strengthening SSGs
16. Support the SSG to maintain an updated list of members.
17. Support formation of action implementation committees, and maintenance of current lists of names for
each committee.
18. Support SSG to schedule monthly meetings and AGM, filing minutes properly.
19. Support SSG to observe their constitution: hold elections as scheduled, define roles of each committee
members, submit timely returns to registrar, etc.
20. Assist in keeping and maintaining records of all transactions, assets and properties (all assets and
properties owned in the name of the group).
D. Community Engagement
21. Support organizational capacity assessments (OCA) to identify gaps and drivers of SSG inaction, and
report making recommendations in order to inform a range of community-focused interventions.
22. Support the development of Site Action Plan for saving species and conserving habitats, promoting
ecological sustainability, and livelihoods i.e., incorporating monitoring and restoration; skills on
influencing government development projects to favor retention and protection of nature, providing
entrepreneurial training and project development supplemental businesses with opportunities for women
etc.
23. Assist to carry out regular needs assessment to inform Training Needs of the different SSG committees,
develop a program of training and organise training workshops to ensure implementation.
24. In collaboration with the implementation committees organize community (Chief’s/village, churches,
women groups, youth groups etc.) meetings to raise awareness on nature conservation actions.
25. Ensure engagement of the local administration i.e. chiefs, village elders, and ward administrators in the
planning and execution of SSG local actions.
26. Assist in coordinating the marking of all global environment important days (WWD, WED, IFD, Bird Big
Day etc.) for optimal impact in awareness creation while documenting numbers (Adult Women & Men,
Children, government officers reached, seedlings planted etc).
E. Monitoring
27. Support in KBA biodiversity monitoring (Basic, detailed & common bird monitoring)
28. Assist to review site monitoring protocol
29. Assist to build capacity in KBA biodiversity monitoring.
F. Advocacy, Communication and Networking
30. Assist to raise local community awareness and support advocacy for community voice, help implement
advocacy and education strategy and communicate biodiversity issues.
31. Assist to consolidate information on Nature Kenya/SSG conservation actions and communicating through
radio, television, print media, and other NK communication channels.
32. Any other task delegated by the Executive Director, Local Action Manager, or other Nature Kenya
managers.
G. Other Responsibilities
33. Undertake any other tasks as may be assigned by the Executive Director, Communication and Advocacy
Manager, Project Manager or other relevant Nature Kenya staff.
