Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel DPP 5 V/No: 4/2023
REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
(i) A cumulative number of Ten (10) years relevant experience from the date of
admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya;
(ii) Served for at least two (2) years at the level of Principal Prosecution Counsel
DPP 6/JG',N',;
(iii Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university; (iv) Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Council of Legal Education; (v) Admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya;
(vi) Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results;
and
(vii) Meets the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010;
Integrity, Leadership, Honesty, Accountability and Discipline in the service to
people.
NOTE: Possession of a Masters degree in law or any other social science from a recognized
institution and a Senior Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks
from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
An officer at this level may be deployed to work in any of the Departments at the Headquarters
or County Office. Specifically, duties and responsibilities will include:
1. Making critical Decision to Charge or not to charge in complex cases and give
directions on investigation files;
2. Undertaking criminal prosecutions in a timely manner to ensure justice is served;
3. Studying and evaluating case files presented and decide on whether to prosecute;
4. Sustaining stakeholder engagements to promote and strengthen collaborative and
symbiotic partnerships and networks;
5. Coordinating stakeholder consultation in the delivery of public prosecution services;
6. Supervision of officers reporting to them for performance management for efficiency
in service delivery.
7. Coordinating the management of appeals to ensure the appeals are attended to in line
with the ODPP appeals management policy and procedures;
8. Undertaking Research on assigned legal issues and compile reports on relevant
information gathered;
9. Preparing preliminary legal documents/instruments, opinions and briefs in line with
the ODPP quality standards;
10. Reviewing investigation files from various law enforcement agencies for legal and
factual sufficiency;
11. Preparing themes for cases and anticipate legal problems or objectives; and
12. Guiding and mentoring personnel working under them.
