POSITION: RIG OPERATOR JOB GROUP CPSB 12
Number of Posts: One (1) Post
Terms of Service: Permanent
Basic Salary Scale: As provided for by the Salaries and Remunerations Commission
Duties and Responsibilities will entail:
i. Operating the water drilling machine
ii. Fill up daily drilling report for activities performed during his/her shift describing the
work carried out and the equipment utilized
iii. Keeping monthly records of services of the machine
iv. Preparing monthly and weekly service schedules and ensuring they are followed
v. Checking, setting up and dismounting the equipment necessary for the assigned shift
i.e., drill pipes and other tubular materials etc. including guiding assigned turn boys
and other machine attendants
vi. Ensure safety standards are adhered to in all his/her work and use compulsory
protective equipment
vii. Issue safe job analysis before start -up of non-routine operation or job and ensure
completion of risk assessment where required in liaison and as shall also be directed
by the supervisor
viii. Instruct all personnel assigned to him for assistance of their duties and
responsibilities and of any special safety precaution to be taken prior to startup of
any work
ix. Ensure that good housekeeping is maintained on the drill floor
x. Perform routine maintenance and safety checks for equipment as prescribed by the
operations manual, including repairing minor defects on machine
xi. Liaising with the officer -in-charge for major repairs
xii. Supervising cleanliness of the machine and
xiii. Any other duty as may be assigned
Requirements for appointment:
i. Must be a Kenyan Citizen
ii. Be in possession of a certificate in plant operator /or at least a certificate from a
recognized institution, Kenya Water Institute (drilling option), PRD rigs Kenya or
any other approved equivalent qualifications;
iii. Be able to do both mud and air drilling.
iv. Be able to interpret hydrogeological survey
v. Be able to do borehole design after drilling
vi. Ba able to do trouble shooting basic and maintenance
vii. Ability to guide and control drilling team on site.
viii. At least five (5) years relevant experience in a busy water drilling and installation
work shop and working with drilling machines;
ix. Must be in possession of a valid driving license.
x. Passed the Departmental Occupational Test III.
xi. Minimum ‘Secondary’ level education.
xii. Ability to work under minimum supervision with a high sense of personal initiative,
keen & fast learner, good communicator, a good team player
