Salary scale: Ksh.115, 290 x 5,770 – 121,060 x 6,050 – 127,110 x 6,240 – 133,350 x
6,420 – 139,770 x 6,610 – 146,380 x6, 790 – 153,170 p.m.
The Director Veterinary Services will be responsible to the Chief Officer in charge of
Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Management for coordination and management of
Veterinary services in the County.
Specific Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:-
(i) Participating in the formulation, development, implementation, monitoring
and review of policies, laws and strategies in the animal health sector.
(ii) Planning and coordinating programmes on the control and eradication of
epizootic and zoonotic diseases and pests, and compiling and interpreting
technical reports;
(iii) Evaluating slaughterhouse designs and making recommendations for
approval;
(iv) Enforcing food safety and quality assurance regulations in local and export
slaughterhouses and other animal products processing plants;
(v) Evaluating export/import requests documents in respect to living animals,
animal products, by-products and inputs and making appropriate
recommendations;
(vi) Planning field efficacy trials for drugs, vaccines and acaricides; disseminating
information on animal health, products and markets; collaborating with
stakeholders in providing veterinary services;
(vii) Coordinating veterinary services at ports of entry;
(viii) Organizing diseases search, investigations, monitoring mapping and outbreak
responses, carrying out investigations on antimicrobial and acaricidal
resistance;
(ix) Liaising with training institutions on training and development of staff,
students and interns;
(x) Planning collaborative activities with relevant stakeholders in the animal
health sector; and
(xi) Coordinating inspection of private veterinary practices and input outlets in
collaboration with Kenya Veterinary Board;and
(xii) Preparing project proposals for resource mobilization; planning and
coordinating staff management and development; and preparing and
implementing work plans and budgets.
Requirement for Appointment
For appointment to this grade, an officer must:-
i) Have served as a Senior Assistant Director of Veterinary Services for a
minimum period of three (3) years;
ii) Hold a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) Degree from a recognized
institution;
iii) Master of Science Degree in any of the following disciplines:- Veterinary
Medicine, Veterinary Surgery, Livestock Economics, Animal Nutrition and Feed
Sciences, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Clinical Studies, Veterinary Public
Health, Livestock production Systems, Poultry science, Veterinary Anatomy,
Reproductive Biology, Veterinary Pathology and Microbiology, Clinical
Pathology and Laboratory Diagnosis, Fish Science, Master of Public Health,
Applied Veterinary Parasitology, Applied Microbiology, Comparative
Mammalian Physiology, Wildlife Health and Management, veterinary
Epidemiology and Economics, Animal Production or Aquatic Sciences from a
recognized institution;
iv) Registered by Kenya Veterinary Board;
v) Have a Certificate in Strategic Leadership Development programme Course
lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institution;
vi) Have a certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution; and
vii) Have shown the outstanding administrative capacity and professional
competence required in managing Veterinary Services;
viii) Satisfy the requirements of chapter six of the Constitution of Kenya.
